That's Merzouga. And it's magnificent.

But there is another desert that everyone has been talking about for a few years, and which is less than an hour from Marrakech: the Agafay desert. No dunes, no fine sand. A lunar, rocky, silent landscape. And yet, we always come back.

We've done both. Several times. And we'll give you our honest opinion so you can choose the one that truly fits your trip.

The journey: that's where everything happens

It's the number one factor. Agafay is 40 minutes from Marrakech. You can leave in the late afternoon, experience the sunset, have dinner under the stars, and be back at your riad before midnight. Or stay the night and return leisurely the next day.

Merzouga is a different story. Count 9 to 10 hours of driving from Marrakech, passing through the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, and the Dadès and Todra gorges. The drive is sublime, frankly, it’s an adventure in itself, but you need to plan for a minimum of 3 days round trip, ideally 4.

If you only have a few days in Marrakech, the question doesn't even arise: Agafay. If you have a week or more and are doing a road trip through Morocco, then Merzouga becomes accessible and is absolutely worth the detour.

The landscape: two different planets

Merzouga is Erg Chebbi. Dunes rising 150 meters, golden sand that changes color with the time of day. At sunrise, you feel like you're on another continent. It's the Sahara, the real one, the one from postcards. Visually, nothing can compare.

Agafay is totally different. It's a stone desert, a rocky, dry plateau with the Atlas Mountains in the background. Some say it resembles the surface of the moon. It's less spectacular in the Instagram sense, but there's something raw and calming about it. The peace there is incredible, and when the sun sets over the stones, the colors are pretty wild. If you're still doubting what Agafay has to offer, we wrote An honest review of what's worth it and what's not in Agafay.

Activities: What to do in each desert?

To Agafay

The advantage of Agafay is its flexibility. An evening dinner + activity costs between €30 and €80 per person. A night in a camp with a pool is around €80 to €200 per night depending on the standard. No significant transportation costs as it is close to Marrakech. We have detailed all real prices of Agafay by range in a dedicated article.

Merzouga, on the other hand, is an investment. Transportation alone (whether by rental car or organized tour) represents a significant budget. Count between €150 and €300 for an all-inclusive 3-day tour from Marrakech, or add fuel and tolls if you rent a car. An overnight stay in a desert camp with a dromedary ride and meals starts around €50 per person for basic, and can go up to €200+ for luxury.

So, Agafay or Merzouga?

Choose Agafay if: You're in Marrakech for a few days and want a desert experience without dedicating your whole trip to it. You're looking for comfort, glamping, or simply a magical evening under the stars, just 40 minutes from the medina.

Choose Merzouga if : You have time (a minimum of 3 days), you dream of the great golden dunes of the Sahara, you want total cultural immersion with Berber communities, and you are ready for the adventure of the journey as much as the destination.

Our opinion? These are not competitors; they are two completely different experiences. Agafay is accessible escape. Merzouga is an expedition. If you can do both during your stay in Morocco, go for it. Otherwise, Agafay will always be there to offer you a taste of the desert without compromising on enjoyment.

Practical tips before leaving

Best time to visit: For both, aim for between October and May. In the summer, Merzouga regularly exceeds 45°C (113°F), making it almost unbearable. Agafay is more bearable but remains very hot from June to August. The months of March-April and October-November are perfect: mild temperatures during the day, cool in the evening, ideal for sleeping under the stars.

What to pack: Even in summer, desert nights are cool. Pack a light jacket. For Merzouga, a scarf (turban) for the sand is essential. For Agafay, closed-toe shoes if you are going to ride a quad or buggy.

How to book: For Agafay, we recommend booking your activities online in advance, especially hot air ballooning, which often sells out. For accommodation, Booking.com remains the most reliable solution for comparing and booking. For Merzouga, organized tours from Marrakech often offer the best value for money.

If Agafay tempts you, <a
