Thirty minutes by taxi northeast of the center, a classified palm grove of 13,000 hectares. In theory. In practice, it's a half-rural, half-luxury territory where palaces rub shoulders with roads without sidewalks and derelict lots. People have lived here for a long time, and they have strong opinions about it.

What we know: people who sleep in the Palmeraie generally don't regret it. There's no density there, the nights are silent, and the hotels that have settled there have had the space to do things right: large gardens, real swimming pools, terraces that breathe. What we also know: it doesn't resemble Marrakech. If you're arriving for the first time and want to feel the medina, the souks, the noise of Jemaa el-Fna at 11 PM, the Palmeraie will disappoint you.

But if you know what you're looking for – peace, greenery, space, a private pool or close to it – then a few places here are truly worthwhile. We'll tell you which ones, and why we chose them.

Who is the Palmeraie for?

La Palmeraie is suitable for specific profiles. Unpleasant surprises almost always stem from a misunderstanding on this point.

It suits me very well To couples who want a real break, those who have already seen Marrakech or don't need the city to feel like they're in a different place. To families with children who need space, a secure swimming pool, and gardens where children can run around safely. To travelers arriving exhausted who want to unwind in a well-maintained setting without a packed schedule. To spa and hammam lovers who want to take their time, half a day without looking at the clock.

It's less suitable For first-time visitors to Marrakech who only have four or five days. They will spend their stay in taxis. For travelers who like to go out at night on foot, improvise, and stroll through the alleys at dinner time. For very tight budgets: affordable accommodation in the Palmeraie is rare, and even the cheapest often involve a taxi ride to dinner. If you're still unsure about the neighborhood, our Complete Guide to Accommodation in Marrakech compare all sectors side-by-side to help you decide.

How does it go when you sleep there

The medina is 20 to 35 minutes away, depending on the exact address within the Palmeraie and the time of day. Outside of peak hours, a regular taxi costs between 50 and 80 dirhams. Ride-sharing apps like Careem work well and avoid negotiations on the return trip, especially in the evening when taxis are less common.

Most reputable hotels offer a shuttle service, at least to the city center or main points of interest. This is a criterion to check when booking: some offer it for free twice a day, others charge for it, and some have no service at all. We have indicated this where relevant for the addresses below.

Regarding dining: there's no neighborhood life on foot. Almost all establishments in Palmeraie have their own restaurant, which isn't an issue if the place is good. To go out for dinner elsewhere, you need a taxi or a shuttle. Walking outside the properties is not very practical: roads without sidewalks, daytime heat, real distances between locations. Palmeraie is a hotel stay, not a neighborhood stay. That's the deal.

Our favorite addresses in the Palmeraie

Out of the 33 addresses in the Palmeraie that our database has recorded with a curation-ready profile, we have selected six that meet different profiles. This five-star hotel occupies a three-hectare park: thoughtfully designed gardens, not a single patch of grass planted just for show. The infinity pool is heated, the spa offers hammams and Moroccan treatments, and the rooms strike that rare balance between rigorous Moroccan architecture and contemporary comfort. The fitness room and the outdoor bar with fireplace add that «you can stay here all day without getting bored» dimension that we appreciate for this type of extended stay. If you're hesitating to compare with a stay in the medina or Guéliz, this is the address that best illustrates what the Palmeraie offers at a mid-range budget.

For those who want something other than a resort

Dar Sabra

Dar Sabra is the most unique property in the corpus, and we mean that in a good way. Two hectares in the heart of the palm grove, architecture that leans towards a hacienda with its patios, clean lines, and modern art gallery in the common areas. Three shared swimming pools, plus private pools for some villas. Rated 9.0/10 across 267 reviews. This is not a chain hotel. Price range is on the lower end for the Palmeraie: accessible if you want tranquility without the palace prices. Note 9.3/10 from 102 reviews. It's a small number of reviews, but consistent with the size of the house. Each room has its own private terrace, the garden is well-maintained, and a spa is available on-site. The hotel is small, which means the pool will never be crowded and the staff will know you by the end of the day. If you want the Palmeraie in an intimate version rather than a resort, this is where we'd send you.

When to come

The Palmeraie is best during the shoulder seasons, from March to May and September to November. In the summer (June to August), the 40-degree Celsius heat makes outdoor activities impractical, even for places with pools. In winter, the days are mild but the nights are cool – check if the pool is heated before booking in December or January, as it makes a big difference. October and April are the most popular months (with corresponding prices). The best value for money: May or September.

The Palmeraie handles the summer better than the medina: the open space and gardens create airflow that the narrow alleyways lack. If you are traveling in July or August, a place with large pools in the Palmeraie is often more pleasant than a riad without ventilation. However, you will have to accept not going out during the hottest parts of the day.

The trap

The Palmeraie without a car or hotel shuttle is tricky. We're saying this because we've seen traveler reviews from people surprised to find themselves stuck at their hotel in the evening after 9 PM, when taxis become scarce and prices go up. It's not the hotel's fault. It's the nature of the place.

The second classic mistake: booking in the Palmeraie thinking «we'll go back and forth to the medina every day.» Technically possible. In practice, exhausting and expensive for a four or five-day trip. It's better to decide honestly: either you go for a medina trip (and stay in the medina or Guéliz), or you go for a relaxing trip (and the Palmeraie becomes exactly what it promises).

Last point: the «palm grove» itself is no longer what it used to be. The palm trees are there, but the area has been fragmented by decades of disparate construction. What you find is space, tranquility, and places that have managed to take advantage of this particular context. That's already a lot, as long as you don't arrive with an image of an intact palm grove in mind.

Our verdict

The Palmeraie is worth a detour if you choose it for the right reasons. For absolute luxury, The Two Towers remains a benchmark that few establishments outside of Marrakech can rival. For families, the Pickalbatros Sungo Club and Palais Mirage d'Atlas cover two different price ranges with the same logic: everything on-site, no need to go out.
