Everything that happens between those two moments decides whether you end up at the bottom of the range or right at the top. Nerve doesn’t count for much. The order of your moves, the moment money comes up and what you know about the item when you walk in weigh far more.

What should you do before naming any figure?

As long as money isn’t on the table, nothing commits you. You can pick the item up, turn it over, ask what it’s made of and who made it. The seller still has no reason to inflate his first price.

You’ll often be offered tea. Accepting doesn’t oblige you to buy, only to stay a few minutes and be pleasant; if you already know you’ll leave empty-handed, it’s better to decline warmly than to drink and run.

When prices come up, two words of darija will get you by: “Bshal?” to ask how much, “ghali bezef” when it’s too expensive.

Above all, arrive with a point of comparison. The posted prices at the Ensemble Artisanal, the state-run crafts center, make a good one. Our page on buying a rug in Marrakech explains how to use them. For haggling, remember that these prices sit a little above what a good negotiator gets in the souks. If your deal goes above them, you’d have done better to buy there without discussion.

Bring cash: 300 to 800 MAD for half a day if you really plan to buy, in small notes.

Make your first attempt on a purchase that will cost you almost nothing if you get it wrong, a bag of spices for example. The page on the souks to visit in Marrakech tells you where to find it without committing to anything else.

Why is the top of our range a finishing point?

On our page about what to see in Marrakech, we advise aiming for 40 to 60% of the initial asking price, then moving up slowly.

The problem lies with the finishing range given at the top of this page. Opening at the top of ours puts you straight away where the deal would have ended. You have nothing left to give up. The shopkeeper will still answer between his figure and yours. Every step you take after that pushes you out of the agreement zone at the top.

So we read our own advice differently. Around 40% to open, and around 60% as the figure where you should end up, not the one you start with.

All this assumes the percentage applies to an honest figure. The rule you read everywhere, offer a third and settle around half, doesn’t hold, because opening prices vary enormously by shop, item, the seller’s day and the person who brought you. Applied to an inflated price, any ratio gives an inflated price.

What is the item worth, whoever the seller is?

Better to know what people actually pay. For 2026, prices paid that are considered reasonable, neither rock-bottom nor tourist rates, put a silver Berber ring at 50 to 150 MAD and a small cedar box at 60 to 120 MAD. A wool stole goes for 100 to 200 MAD, a medium-sized leather pouf 300 to 500 MAD. A seller asking three to five times these amounts is starting very high. These figures aren’t for reciting at the counter: they tell you, from the first price, whether you’re facing an ordinary opening or a price that doesn’t even deserve a counteroffer.

An item missing from this list is judged the same way, by comparing before committing: that’s the method of the overview page on the Marrakech souks.

If someone led you to the shop, their commission is built into the price before you’ve even opened your mouth. It amounts to 20 to 40% of what you spend. You’re then negotiating from a higher figure than a customer who walked in alone. The maneuvers that get you there are described on the page for finding your way in the souks. The fix is simple: find your shops yourself.

Which arguments bring a price down?

A price moves when you buy several items, when you pay cash, when you arrive near closing time, when you know the regional style by name and when you visibly have all the time in the world.

Volume is the easiest lever to use. In our guide to what to bring back from Marrakech, we tell of three pairs of babouches bought for the price of two, in a quiet alley. So group your purchases with a single shopkeeper instead of scattering them from one stall to the next.

Cash matters less than you’d think. At a stall, cards are rarely accepted, so everyone pays in cash and it doesn’t set you apart from anyone. The argument only works in shops with a card terminal.

Both ends of the day work in your favor. The first customer of the morning is said to bring the shopkeeper luck. For a first negotiation, opening time is therefore a good slot. Be wary, on the other hand, of the seller who promises a special price because his shop is supposedly closing in ten minutes: souk stalls don’t close in ten minutes, and the line mostly serves to stop you from comparing.

In the end, it all comes down to a state of mind: being willing to leave without the item. A “last price” thrown out early is rarely the last, and a polite step toward the door usually brings out a real one. If nobody calls you back, the price may already have been reasonable.

Where don’t you haggle?

Clearly marked fixed-price cooperative shops are paid at the asking price. So are restaurants, pharmacies and transport. On Jemaa el-Fna, the food stalls post near-fixed prices, but ask what anything brought to you that you didn’t order costs.

For taxis, the rule is different. The small red taxis are supposed to run on the meter in town, and the driver who says it’s broken often proposes a flat fare of two to three times the metered price. Ask for the meter as you get in, and get out if he refuses.

With henna, the discussion never happens at the right moment. Around Jemaa el-Fna, women grab a tourist’s hand, start the design without asking anything, then demand payment, commonly 100 to 200 MAD. Once the drawing is started, the pressure to pay becomes strong. So say “no” right away, firmly, and pull your hand back at the first touch.

If you want one, agree on the price for a specific design and size before holding out your hand, making clear you won’t pay more. For other street traps, see what we write about traveler safety in Marrakech.

Should you fight over a few dirhams with the person who made the item?

Behind a hand-cut zellige or a hammered brass piece lie days of skilled work. An item made this way takes time, and that time has a cost.

We draw a surprising rule from this: the workshop is where you haggle least. The item passes through fewer middlemen there, so the starting price is already more likely to be fair. Whatever you’d gain by pushing would come straight out of the pocket of the person who made it. There, you stick to one counteroffer and close on the answer.

Save your energy for items stacked by the dozen, identical from one shop to the next, from no workshop you’ve seen. On those, haggle as much as you like.

And when the gap between you and the seller wouldn’t even pay for a tea on a terrace, stop.

What counts as rude?

No price drops because you raise your voice, mock the item or act outraged; inventing a nearby shop that supposedly offered it at half price works no better, and these manners come across as rudeness in alleys where the shopkeepers know each other and talk.

Finding a price too high doesn’t oblige you to say the item is badly made. You can refuse with a smile, without taking anything away from the craftsman’s work.

The most serious mistake comes at the end. An accepted price counts as an agreement, and walking away after accepting it is taken very badly.

What should you watch for when paying?

Everything that matters about the item gets checked before the yes: dimensions, material, finish, the slightest flaw. After the handshake, it’s too late to use it as an argument.

Then pay with the small notes you planned at the start. With a large note, souk sellers sometimes give the wrong change. A change mistake takes back in one move what the haggling had won you.

Count your change before leaving the stall, even with the shopkeeper who served you tea.

First figure, counteroffer, arguments that lower the price, places where you don’t haggle: haggling in the Marrakech souks, step by step.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[37,33,2

56
post-6519","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-conseils-pratiques","category-decouverte","category-featured
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/3e45b7c680560ac1db6c11982aed0b2d0befa0523d573a8dcca0307397b80463?s=96&d=mm&r=g
["GET
