Beyond that, everything is counted in hours of driving each way: less than two hours for the Atlas, nearly three hours for Ouzoud as for Essaouira, and about four hours for Aït-Ben-Haddou. As long as the time spent on site outweighs the time spent sitting, the outing is worth the trip. When the road eats more than half the day, you need a real reason to go, or a night on site.

Three quarters of an hour away: Agafay

The Agafay desert is a rocky desert, with no dunes. You leave in the early afternoon for a camel ride, a quad ride or a dinner facing the sunset, and you sleep in town that same evening, without having given up a whole day of medina.

Anyone expecting golden sand will be disappointed. Some activities also depend on wind and rain, and can be rescheduled on the day itself.

Choosing a camp and the real prices of activities in Agafay have their own page, with the schedule of each package.

An hour and a half away: the Atlas

Imlil is less than two hours away by car. Yet walking between the villages above Imlil and following the river in the Ourika Valley make two days that have almost nothing in common, and our page on the Atlas day trip from Marrakech decides between the two, and also says what a “Toubkal” offer wrapped up in one day is worth.

Two and a half to three hours: Ouzoud or Essaouira

Same distance, opposite days: nature on one side, a town on the other.

The Ouzoud waterfalls are 150 to 160 km away, or 2 h 30 to 3 h each way. On site, the falls drop in several tiers over about 110 meters, an easy loop of about an hour goes around them through the olive groves, and small shared boats approach the foot of the main waterfall. Barbary macaques are part of the scenery, and you can swim in some of the pools downstream of the main falls. The paths include steps, so bring sneakers. The flow is strongest in spring. In summer, the cool of the pools draws the crowds.

Essaouira is 190 km away, and the drive takes 2 h 30 to 3 h without stops. Its fortified 18th-century medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. It is a calmer town than Marrakech, turned toward the port and the ocean, and swept by the trade winds.

After three days in the Marrakech medina, Ouzoud is the bigger change of scene, in our view. Essaouira offers another medina, a gentler one, with ramparts on the ocean: if this is your first stay and you liked the souks, it holds its own. If you have had your fill of alleyways, take the waterfalls.

In both cases, leave before 8 a.m. The road out of Marrakech is busy between 8 and 9 a.m., then again between 5 and 6:30 p.m., just when you are coming back.

Four hours and more: Aït-Ben-Haddou

The ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, on the southern slope of the High Atlas in Ouarzazate province, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. It is about 4 h by road from Marrakech, and the visit takes roughly two hours.

The road crosses the Tizi-n’Tichka pass, at 2,260 meters, the highest road pass in the country. It takes at least 4 h 30 to 5 h for the 200 km between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, on a mountain road full of bends and trucks, and from December to March snow can temporarily close the pass.

Do the math: about eight hours of mountain road in one day for two hours at the ksar. We do not recommend it as a round trip. Aït-Ben-Haddou is best visited with a night on site or in Ouarzazate, as the first stop on a trip to the South.

With children

In Agafay, the camel ride is accessible from age 4 or 5, with a guide holding the animal’s rope, and the two-seater buggy takes a child passenger from age 8. A caution for a pool day: some high-end camps do not accept children. For two adults and two children, our Agafay guide counts about 120 to 180 € for the outing, prices checked in September 2026. Destination by destination, day trips with children are covered age by age in a separate page.

With older children, Ouzoud is the one we would choose for a long day: there is water, a short loop, boats and monkeys, enough to keep a child alert after three hours in the car. Do not let them feed the macaques. Used to visitors as they are, they remain wild animals.

Between June and August, the heat tops 37 °C during the day in Marrakech, which means going out early in the morning or in the late afternoon with young children. Agafay at sunset suits that; a day at Ouzoud in the middle of August, much less. And a child prone to motion sickness will not cope well with the bends of the Tichka.

Essaouira in a day

Yes, for adults who come for the medina, the port and the ramparts. With five to six hours in the car round trip, a 7:30 a.m. departure and a return around 8 p.m. leave five to six hours in town. That is enough for the essentials; the beach and water sports call for an extra night.

The hour-by-hour schedule is in our page on the day in Essaouira from Marrakech.

Two things already eat into that time without anyone noticing: the stops at argan cooperatives along the road, and a lunch at the port that drags on. Every stop planned on the way out comes off your time on site. With young children, a night on site makes the day far more pleasant, especially since the wind of the “city of the trade winds” makes the beach, on some days, a place for walking more than for swimming.

Private or group

The group suits when the schedule is fixed anyway, and we return to it in detail by comparing the group outing and the reserved car. A sunset followed by dinner in Agafay is the same experience in a shared minibus or in a reserved car.

On long roads, the private option comes into its own. Toward Ouzoud or Essaouira, being able to stop when a child needs a break, leave at the time that suits you and stay an extra hour at the waterfalls changes the day. The price of a booked car is split among its passengers: the more of you there are, the more the per-person gap with the group narrows, and that is often where the question gets settled.

Between the two, the beige grands taxis also run to the Atlas, Essaouira or Agafay, hired privately or shared, as we explain in our rundown of safe transport for travelers in Marrakech. The taxi drives you, nothing more: once you arrive, you are on your own.

In a group, ask how many people will be in the vehicle. A day with eight and a day with twenty are not alike.

Two offers that look alike

Two “Ouzoud, full day” excursions can carry the same title without offering the same day, and our method for comparing two excursions that look alike goes through them line by line. The basic calculation is one subtraction: from the pickup time to the promised return time, take away twice the journey, and what remains is the time actually spent on site. “Cooperative” stops and roadside viewpoints count in the duration, not in the visit.

The listed price misleads as much as the duration. If the boat, lunch or entrance fees are not listed as included, they will be paid on site, and the cheapest offer can end up costing more.

The Sahara, out of reach

One frequent request remains: seeing real dunes. What each of the two Moroccan deserts demands in time is laid out in our comparison Agafay or Merzouga. Merzouga is about ten hours by road from Marrakech, so no day package, nor even an overnight one, lets you get there and back without spending most of the stay on the road.

Agafay, l’Atlas, Ouzoud, Essaouira ou Aït-Ben-Haddou : chaque excursion à la journée depuis Marrakech se juge au temps passé sur place face au temps de route.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_featured_image_duplicate_dismissed":0
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[37,33,2

56
post-6531","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-conseils-pratiques","category-decouverte","category-featured
https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/3e45b7c680560ac1db6c11982aed0b2d0befa0523d573a8dcca0307397b80463?s=96&d=mm&r=g
["GET
