Where to sleep in the Agafay Desert

We live in Marrakech, and regularly take our friends and family to Agafay. The choice of camp is the most important decision of your stay: between the authentic bivouac at 60€ and the luxury lodge at 400€ per night, the difference in experience is immense - and the highest price doesn't always mean the best night.

We sifted through more than 30 establishments - staying, dining and sometimes leaving disappointed - to come up with 11 addresses. Here's our honest selection, with the good surprises and the pitfalls to avoid.

How these camps were selected: On-site visits Jan-Feb 2026. Criteria: location, bedding, pool, service, value for money and verified Booking reviews (minimum 50 reviews). No camp has paid us to appear in this list.

Inara Camp ★ Coup de Cœur Luxe

💎 Luxury 💰 €250-320/night (Emotion Tent), €355-385 (Inara Suite) 🏊 2 pools including 1 heated «Desert Lagoon» pool» 🍽️ Gourmet restaurant on site 🏕️ 19 tents 25-36m² + private terrace 📐 21 hectares 🅿️ Free parking ⭐ 9.1/10 Booking - Staff 9.4 - Cleanliness 9.4 - Comfort 9.4 (479 reviews)

Inara Camp is our first recommendation without hesitation. Founded by Vincent Jaquet, a pioneer of desert tourism in Morocco, the camp is spread over 21 hectares - a surface area that means you never feel cramped, even in high season when other camps resemble tented villages.

For whom : Couples, families, groups of friends who want luxury with substance, not just a facade. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Ask for a canyon-side tent for the best view when you wake up. In low season (May-Sept), prices drop by 20-25%.

Oxygen Lodge - La Plus Belle Piscine

💎 Luxury 💰 ~220-350€/night (MAD 2 416 basic) 🏊 Infinity face Atlas pool 🍽️ Restaurant + breakfast included 🏕️ Air-conditioned tents, private bathroom 🅿️ Free parking - Family rooms available ⭐ 9.6/10 Booking - Genius level (2,062 reviews)

If you've come to Agafay for ONE photo, it's probably the one of Oxygen Lodge you've seen. The infinity pool with the Atlas Mountains in the background has become a social networking classic - and in person, it's just as beautiful as in the photos. Maybe even more so, because the photos don't capture the sunset light that turns the water to gold.

For whom : Design-lovers, wellness enthusiasts, photographers, slow travelers. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Sunrise yoga is included and well worth waking up for at 6:30 am. Don't miss it - the light over the Atlas at that hour is magical.

Agafay Luxury Camp - Most Instagrammed

💎 Luxury 💰 ~250-400€/night (luxury lodge from MAD 450) 🏊 2 swimming pools + private hot tubs 🍽️ Gourmet restaurant - Spa 🏕️ 20 tents with outdoor bath 🅿️ Airport shuttle - Free parking ⭐ 8.2/10 Booking - Genius level (3,590 reviews)

This is Agafay's most photogenic camp. With its desert-facing outdoor pool, sumptuous tents, double private pool and that dreamy golden sunset light - Agafay Luxury Camp is an extraordinary photo machine. The visual «wow factor» is real and unmatched in the region.

For whom : Couples in search of a powerful visual moment, content creators, honeymooners. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Book with free cancellation to secure your date without risk. Avoid weekends if you want peace and quiet.

Alkamar Camp ★ Best value for money

🏕️ Mid-range 💰 €100-160/night (Double room from MAD 2,277) 🏊 Panoramic pool 🍽️ 2 on-site restaurants 🏕️ Elegant lodges, double & panoramic rooms available 🅿️ Free parking - Free Wi-Fi connection ⭐ 8.8/10 Booking - Exceptional - Staff 9.1 - Cleanliness 9.7 (344 reviews)

This is our number one recommendation for 80% travelers. Why? Because Alkamar offers 90% of the Agafay experience for a third of the price of luxury camps. It's the very definition of value for money.

For whom : Families, groups of friends, smart travelers who refuse to overpay. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: On weekdays, prices drop by ~15%. Ask for a poolside lodge to enjoy the view from the moment you wake up.
⚠️ Temporarily unavailable at time of booking - please check back.

Be Agafay - Young & Design Ambiance Not available

✨ High-end 💰 ~420€/night (2 pers.) 🏊 ✓ Original design pool 🍽️ Restaurant + bar 🎨 Contemporary design, yurtes 📍 Managed by Mohamed Bousaadi

Be Agafay is currently unavailable for booking on Booking.com. Nevertheless, it's one of Agafay's most distinctive establishments: a contemporary design aesthetic, luxurious yurts, a sculpted swimming pool, and a young, festive atmosphere that contrasts with the more classic camps.

For whom : Young couples, groups of friends aged 25-40, EVJF/EVG, design enthusiasts. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 What to watch for: Check availability regularly on Booking.com - the property may reopen for bookings in the near future.

Les Terrasses d'Agafay - Le Plus Grand

✨ High-end 💰 Price on request (not shown on Booking) 🏊 Heated swimming pool 🍽️ Restaurant Dabali (lunch + dinner, Moroccan cuisine) 🏕️ 52 tents - Agafay's largest camp 🌐 Linked to Inara Camp (same group) ⭐ 8.7/10 Booking - Superb - Staff 9.1 - Cleanliness 8.9 (835 reviews)

With 50 tents, Les Terrasses is by far the largest camp in Agafay. This is its main advantage for groups: weddings, seminars, large families, EVJFs for 15 people - there's room for everyone.

For whom : Groups, events, large families, seminars. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Book poolside, not roadside. Tents on the periphery are quieter and offer a better view.

Le Bédouin Agafay - The Reliable Mid-Range

🏕️ Mid-range 💰 ~120-180€/night (Superior Suite from MAD 2,561) 🏊 ✓ Swimming pool 🍽️ Restaurant - Breakfast included 🏕️ Apartments & suites available 🅿️ Free parking - PRM facilities ⭐ 8.1/10 Booking - Very good (132 reviews)

Bedouin is the definition of «solid with no surprises». Reviews are consistently positive about the setting, the welcome and the comfort of the tents. It's a mid-range camp that does its job well without pretending to be something it's not.

For whom : First stay Agafay, budget couples, families. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: The package with activities included (camel + dinner) is often the best deal. Compare «night only» vs. «night + activities».

Agafay Pearl Camp - The Dome Experience

🏕️ Mid-range 💰 €70-175/night (Basic tent from MAD 699) 🏊 ✓ Swimming pool 🔮 Geodesic domes + classic tents 🍽️ Restaurant - Entertainment included 🅿️ Airport shuttle - Barbecue facilities ⭐ 9.0/10 Booking - Exceptional (697 reviews)

The originality of Agafay Pearl Camp lies in its transparent geodesic domes. You literally sleep under the stars, protected by a bubble. The photos are spectacular and the experience is truly different from a conventional tent.

For whom : Star gazers, travelers in search of originality, couples for a special occasion. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Choose an east-facing dome to watch the sunrise from your bed - without even having to get up.

La Maison du Désert - Authenticity elevated to an art form

🏕️ Mid-range 💰 €85-230/night (Double room from MAD 917) 🏊 ✗ No swimming pool - garden and terrace 🍽️ Breakfast included - Moroccan home cooking 🏠 Double, triple and family rooms (up to 5 people) 🅿️ Free parking - Room service ⭐ 9.6/10 Booking - Exceptional - Staff 9.8 - Cleanliness 9.7 (201 reviews)

La Maison du Désert is the Agafay desert without compromising on authenticity. No pool, no DJ, no glitter - just a beautifully restored Berber house nestled in ochre stone, with a breathtaking view of the Atlas Mountains.

For whom : Couples, travelers in search of authenticity, lovers of Moroccan cuisine, minimalists. ✓ Tested - Feb 2026
💡 Tip: Ask for the room with a direct view of the Atlas Mountains when booking - it goes first.

A traditional Moroccan dinner in the open air, the starry sky above, Gnaoua music echoing in the silence of the desert. It's the moment travelers remember longest.

Our verdict

Is the Agafay Desert worth the trip?

Yes - if you know what to expect.

What it is: Agafay is a stone desert (reg), ochre and mineral, with the Atlas Mountains in the background. Just 45 minutes from Marrakech - not a 10-hour drive like Merzouga. Accessible, photogenic, and with tried-and-tested experiences: glamping camps, camel rides, quad biking, dinners under the stars.

What it is NOT: This is not the Sahara. No dunes, no total isolation. If that's what you're looking for, Agafay will disappoint you - and we'd rather tell you now.

Our verdict: For a city-break from Marrakech with a night in the desert, Agafay is Morocco's most accessible and convenient option. Choose the right camp, the right timing, and you'll have a memorable experience. Having spent dozens of nights in the area over the last few years, our recommendation remains the same: book Inara or Alkamar for your first time, and avoid weekend nights in high season if you want the authentic desert atmosphere.

Agafay weather varies greatly with the seasons. Winter (Jan-Feb): 18-20°C during the day, 5-8°C at night. Spring (Mar-Apr) and autumn (Oct-Nov): ideal, 22-28°C during the day, mild nights. Summer (Jul-Aug): 35-42°C - very hot, but prices drop. The best period is October-April.
The Agafay desert is an ochre and mineral stone desert (reg), not a sand desert. It lies at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, 45 minutes from Marrakech. It's more accessible than the Sahara, but different: no dunes, but spectacular mineral landscapes, quality glamping camps and memorable Atlas sunsets.
Agafay (45 min) = convenient city-break from Marrakech, glamping camps, ideal for 1-2 days. Merzouga (10h drive or domestic flight) = real Erg Chebbi dunes, authentic Sahara, deeper immersion but 3+ days required. Agafay vs Sahara: these are two complementary experiences, not competing ones.
If you're staying in a camp, the agafay restaurant is on site (half-board often included). For day trips, the agafay desert dinner is organized via GYG or Viator operators, with transfers included. Independent restaurants outside camps are rare - it's best to book your meal in advance.

Upscale and luxury camps offer wifi, but bandwidth is often limited. The mobile network (3G/4G) works well in the Agafay area.
Some high-end camps offer a hammam or spa treatments (Inara Camp, Oxygen Lodge). Mid-range camps generally don't.
Both work. Booking.com often offers free cancellation and a price guarantee. Direct booking sometimes gives access to negotiated rates in low season.
In mid-range and luxury camps: yes, with plugs for charging your devices. In budget camps: not always. Bring an external battery.
The agafay hot-air balloon costs from €150/person, including transfer from Marrakech. The flight lasts about 1 hour, followed by a Berber breakfast. Book at least 1 week in advance in high season - places are limited.
Both are valid according to your wishes. By day (excursion from Marrakech): pool + lunch + camel + sunset. With an overnight stay: you add dinner show, starry sky and sunrise - a much more complete experience. Our recommendation: at least 1 night to really disconnect.
Yes, the agafay camel ride is accessible from the age of 4-5 with an adult. The camels are used to tourists and the operators are experienced. Children are always accompanied by a guide who holds the camel's rope.
