In Marrakech, a hammam isn't just another activity. It's often the moment that resets the body: heat, steam, black soap, kessa glove... and that feeling of emerging with new skin. But when you're planning your trip, the same questions come up: how much does it really cost, how does it work, will I be comfortable, is it worth blocking two hours in the schedule?
This guide isn't a history lesson. We answer what you're really asking, with realistic prices observed in several hammams and spas in Marrakech (local hammams, riads, hotel spas, online offers).

Why a hammam spa in Marrakech?
You can visit palaces, walk through souks, watch the sunset from a rooftop... and go home without a hammam. True enough. But if you like sensations + local culture, the hammam is in the top 3.
Some good reasons to think seriously about it:
- Recover after a day of sightseeing, a desert excursion or long hours negotiating in the souks.
- Try out a real Moroccan ritual in a context where well-being is not just a marketing concept.
- An unforgettable moment as a couple (hammam + massages + after-party = combo that sticks in the memory).
- Breaking the travel rhythm a slow interlude in a busy schedule.
And above all: it's an adaptable activity. You can experience a simple neighborhood hammam, an ultra-comfortable hotel spa, a romantic duo package, or “just” a massage if steam scares you a little.
How a Moroccan hammam spa works (no surprises)
The first time, we all have the same hesitations: “where am I going to be left? what am I going to keep on me? will it be violent? Here's the classic procedure to help you visualize before you go.
- Reception and checkroom - We welcome you, confirming what you've booked (simple hammam, hammam + scrub, massage...). You'll be shown to a changing room or small cabin. In spas, you're provided with a towel, sometimes a bathrobe and flip-flops. There's no need to be completely naked.
- Hot and steam room - You enter a warm, humid room. Sit down, breathe and let the heat do its work. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If you feel hot or dizzy, you can leave the room for a few minutes: this is permitted, but not an endurance test.
- Black soap - The black soap (beldi) is applied to your body, except your face. The texture is a little disconcerting the first time, but pleasant. Leave it on for a while: this is what really prepares the skin for exfoliation.
- Kessa glove scrub - The famous moment. The glove is rough, the strokes are firm, the dead skin rolls away. Yes, it's invigorating. No, it's not supposed to be torture. If you think it's “too much”, say so: the pressure adapts. The idea is to come out light, not traumatized.
- Rinse and possibly ghassoul - Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Depending on the location and the formula, we sometimes add a ghassoul (clay) or honey wrap, or a little argan oil moisturizer. These are extras, not requirements.
- Break, tea and rest - You come out of the wet room, dry off, and are often offered a mint tea or herbal tea. That's when many people feel their fatigue suddenly disappear. This is normal: you've sweated, relaxed your muscles and taken a real break.
- Massage (if provided) - If you've chosen a massage package, it comes next: 30, 50 or 80 minutes depending on what you've booked. Relaxing, toning, targeting the back or legs... it's up to you to say what you need.
Great options: popular, cosy, spa hotel
Local hammams and authentic addresses
We're talking about places frequented by locals, sometimes with a little adaptation for travelers (explanations, all-inclusive packages). Atmosphere: simple, sometimes lively, sometimes a little rough. This is the “everyday” version of the hammam.
- For whom? Curious people, tight budgets, travelers who like “real” experiences even if it's not Instagrammable everywhere.
- Comfort : basic, but often clean and efficient. Sometimes you bring your own towel and flip-flops.
- Benchmark price : single entry + scrub from 150-300 MAD (≈ €14-27) depending on options.
Urban spas & riads with hammam
These addresses combine pleasant surroundings with reasonable prices. The rituals are highly structured: hammam, body scrub, body wrap, massage and sometimes facials. Communication is simpler (French/English) and steps are well explained.
- For whom? Couples, friends, travelers who want a pretty, bright setting, without blowing the budget.
- Comfort : towels provided, soft music, more intimate cabins, clean showers.
- Benchmark price : hammam + scrub + massage rituals around 450-800 MAD (≈ 41-73 €) per person depending on duration and location.
Hotel spas & couples packages
Here, we're all about “full comfort”: grand hotels, palaces, indoor pools, elaborate lighting, cosmetics brands, couples' cabins, beautiful design. We come as much for the hammam as for the overall setting.
- For whom? City-break couples, anniversary stays, honeymoons, people who want a very focused moment.
- Comfort : maximum. We give you everything, we go everywhere with you, the experience is very fluid.
- Benchmark price : complete rituals and duo formulas around 900-1,600 MAD (≈ 82-145 €) for two in most hotel spas; more in iconic palaces.
How much does it (really) cost? Simple benchmarks
So you don't have to spend your evening comparing treatment cards, here are some quick pointers. The amounts are taken from public rates at several Marrakech spas and may vary slightly, but they give a good idea of what's “normal”.
- Single hammam admission (without scrub) : about 100-200 MAD (≈ €9-18) depending on location and comfort level.
- Hammam + scrub : generally between 250-400 MAD (≈ €23-36) in traveler-friendly addresses.
- Massage alone (45-60 min) : often 350-700 MAD (≈ 32-64 €) depending on duration and spa range.
- Complete hammam + scrub + massage ritual 45-60 min around 500-900 MAD (≈ 45-82 €) per person in many urban spas and riads.
- Grand rituel (hammam + scrub + long massage + body wrap) Count on 800-1,200 MAD (≈ €73-109) in fine addresses.
- Couples / duo packages : in general 900-1,600 MAD (≈ 82-145 €) for two people, depending on duration and what's included.
If you're advertised something far outside these ranges, it's not necessarily a scam, but it's worth asking a few questions: exact duration, what's included, level of privatization, pool access or not, transfers, etc.
Choosing the right area, atmosphere and timing
On site, the difference is often made on very concrete things: “Is it near my hotel?”, “Do I want something ultra quiet or am I OK with a bit of life?”, “Do I have 1 h 30 or 3 h in front of me?”.
Medina - If you're staying in a riad, the simplest solution is often to stay in the Medina: small riad spas, traditional hammams, hidden addresses in the alleyways. You can combine a visit, a hammam and dinner in the same area. Handy if you like to do everything on foot.
Guéliz - The new city, with its more modern institutes and urban spas. It's easy to find, simple to explain to the cab driver and reassuring if you're afraid of getting lost. The atmosphere is a little less “tale of a thousand and one nights”, but very comfortable.
Wintering and hotel areas - Perfect if you're already in a hotel or want a real resort atmosphere: pools, gardens, bar, restaurants. You can do a hammam in the late morning, have lunch there, read a bit, then go out again for your evening.
When it comes to timing, just remember this:
- Visit beginning of stay to erase the fatigue of the trip.
- Visit environment to break up a marathon of visits or excursions.
- Visit end of stay to leave feeling truly relaxed, not destroyed by the pace.
How to avoid discomfort (modesty, sensations, health)
It's not the concept of the hammam that makes people hesitate. It's the fear of being too naked, of not understanding the codes, or of feeling uncomfortable in the heat.
- Modesty: you always keep a swimsuit or undergarment. Many spas provide disposable underwear. If you're very modest, tell the receptionist so we can adapt the way you cover up during the scrub and massage.
- Physical contact: scrubbing involves a little manipulation (turning you, asking you to lie down, etc.). This is normal, but your limits remain your own. A “gentler”, “not there”, “stop” is perfectly acceptable.
- Normal sensations : warmth, gentle tiredness, “floating” sensation after the session. Many people sleep very well the night afterwards.
- When to watch out: history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high-risk pregnancy, severe fatigue or dehydration. In such cases, seek medical advice before travelling, and opt for a gentle massage rather than a very hot hammam.
Three easy-to-copy mini-scenarios
1. Testing without burning out the day (≈ 2 hours)
You've got a busy schedule, but want to experience at least one real hammam.
- Book a hammam + scrub in the late afternoon (4-6 p.m., for example).
- Quick return to the hotel to change.
- Follow it up with dinner or a drink in the sky: the guide Rooftops & terraces in Marrakech will help you find the terrace that suits your style (more chill, more lively, more panoramic).
2. Half-day couple signing
You're there to mark the occasion: birthday, city-break, surprise gift.
- Reserve a duo formula (hammam + massages) mid-afternoon.
- After the session, take a real break at the hotel or riad (no direct rush).
- In the evening, choose a lively dinner or a dinner-show to extend the moment. To filter the options (show, atmosphere, budget), click on Going out in Marrakech (evenings & dinner-shows).
3. Same day relaxation & Agafay desert
If you have a full day ahead of you, this combo works very well:
- Morning : spa access + gentle massage in a hotel or spa with a pool.
- Late afternoon: departure for Agafay desert for a sunset and dinner under the stars.
- To choose the right type of party (simple, more upscale, with activities), take the time to read our guide to the Agafay desert before booking.
Short FAQ: the questions we really ask ourselves
1. Do I have to book in advance?
Not everywhere, but it's a real safety feature, especially for spas and couples packages. In high season and at weekends, it's a good idea to aim for 24-48 hours' notice.
2. Does exfoliation hurt?
It's invigorating, it feels like it's rubbing. But it's not supposed to be torture. If it exceeds your tolerance threshold, say so. It really changes the experience.
3. What should I bring?
In a spa: often just your bathing suit, everything else is provided. In a hammam: bathing suit, towel, flip-flops. If you don't know, ask when you book.
4. Is it possible to have a hammam after an excursion or a long day's walking?
Yes, and it's actually very pleasant. The idea is just not to combine an ultra-hot hammam with a hyper-tonic massage if you're already exhausted. Instead, opt for a gentler massage.
5. How do I know if the price is right?
Keep the benchmarks in mind: around 250-400 MAD (≈ 23-36 €) for a “classic” hammam + scrub, 500-900 MAD (≈ 45-82 €) for a full ritual with massage, 900-1,600 MAD (≈ 82-145 €) for a duo. If we're way above, check what's included (palace, pool access, long privatization, etc.).
