Marrakech is a festival in itself. The noise of the mopeds in the alleyways, the shouts of the vendors, the perfumes that jump out at you... But then, when a real festival arrives in this setting, it's as if the city is being switched into full volume.
I've had the good fortune - or the folly - to attend several of these events during my travels. Here are the ten that made the biggest impression on me. Not just a calendar, but what you feel when you're there, among the people.

1. Festival des Arts Populaires - Morocco in Technicolor
When : July
Where El Badi Palace & Jemaa el-Fna
Price free of charge
In the evening, the ramparts of the Palais El Badi are lit up, and off we go: drums, dances, fire-eaters and snake charmers. You go from a group of Berber dancers to a Gnawa orchestra in a matter of meters. And on Jemaa el-Fna, it goes on until late, with storytellers surrounded by fascinated kids.
I had planned to “just drop in”... I left at midnight, ears ringing and a huge smile on my face.
2. International Film Festival - Glamour version Marrakech
When : December
Where Palais des Congrès & outdoor screenings
Price free of charge for certain sessions
You find yourself sitting on a plastic chair in Place Jemaa el-Fna, watching a film projected onto a giant screen... and behind you, a snail seller shouting his prices. That's cinema in Marrakech: an unlikely mix.
If you want to play on the red carpet, there are also galas at the Palais des Congrès, with long dresses and flashbulbs everywhere. I bumped into a French actor on the way out... he ended up drinking tea next to me.
3. Marrakech Biennial - Art spilling over into the street
When February (odd-numbered years)
Where Everywhere in the city
Price : often free of charge
One afternoon, I got lost in the medina and came across a contemporary art installation in an old abandoned riad. That's what the Biennale is all about: letting yourself be surprised. A wall of photos here, a performance in an alleyway there...

4. Festival International du Conte - Words that travel
When : March
Where Riads & Jemaa el-Fna
Price MAD: approx. 50
An old man sitting on a carpet, an oil lamp beside him, and a hundred people around him, hanging on his every word. He speaks Arabic, a translator whispers in French, and yet... you already understand with his gestures.

5. Oasis Festival - Beats and Atlas
When September
Where Private places near Marrakech
Price from 800 MAD
Sunset over the Atlas mountains, turquoise pool, live DJ set. You go from an open-air dancefloor to a chill corner with cushions and Moroccan lamps. And all with people from all over the world.
Tip: plan a break in the afternoon, otherwise you won't make it through the evening.
6. International Magic Festival - Bewitched Marrakech
When October
Where Palais des Congrès & medina
Price from 150 MAD
Card tricks on a café terrace, an illusion show in a theater, and even a magician who made a pastilla disappear in front of me (well, he ate it). A joyful festival that works with children and adults alike.
7. Short Film Festival - Small films, big effects
When : April
Where Cultural venues in the medina
Price approx. 80 MAD
What I like here is the proximity. You see a short film, then have a chat with the director in the courtyard of a riad over a cup of tea. No distance, no star system. Just passionate people sharing.
What you need to know before diving into a festival in Marrakech
- Dates on the move : always check the official website.
- Housing Book early, especially for the Film Festival and Biennale.
- Dress chic for cinema, casual for street food, modest for Sufi.
- Cash Many stands and tickets do not accept the card.
- Unforeseen You're welcome to be surprised: it's Marrakech.
Festivals here aren't just events on a calendar. They are pieces of life that invite themselves into yours. You leave with images, sounds, smells... and sometimes even a song you're still humming months later.
