Planning and booking your activities in Marrakech

In town, almost everything costs little and gets decided the day before. The budget and the planning are settled elsewhere: on the outings beyond Marrakech, and on details people rarely look at before paying, such as the transfer, included or not, where you buy and when you pay.

What budget should you plan for activities?

The Bahia Palace costs 100 DH for a foreign adult, according to the Ministry of Culture ticket office consulted in September 2026. A hammam with scrub, booked online, starts at around 150 MAD, or about 14 €. A morning in the medina, a palace and a hammam at the end of the day therefore come to around 250 MAD per person. To go lower still, Marrakech’s free visits and cheapest tickets are listed separately.

Outside the city, the scale changes. In Agafay, a quad costs 35 to 50 € per person for two hours, a buggy 45 to 65 €, generally with the transfer from Marrakech, the guide and the equipment. The most requested package, a camel ride at sunset, dinner and a show with transfer, starts at about 30 € per person online. To compare the camps one by one, everything is in our guide to the Agafay desert and its prices.

One notch up, the full hammam with a one-hour massage and transfer runs around 600 to 700 MAD, or 56 to 65 €. At the very top is the hot air balloon, whose price only makes sense alongside what it covers: that is the subject of our page on the hot air balloon flight in Marrakech.

Over four or five days, keep the city spending tight and put the money into one or two chosen outings, not five. An evening in Agafay and a proper hammam is already a lot for a stay of that length. Which ones to choose? Our guide to what to do in Marrakech ranks them, with a three-day plan.

Money is mostly lost at the moment of buying, in the street, without comparing. The same camel ride, between 25 and 40 € booked online, can climb to 50 or 60 € bought from a middleman in the medina or directly at the camp. Double, sometimes, for the same hour on the same animal.

Is transport from the riad included?

For outings to Agafay, most often yes: quad and buggy rides are generally sold with the transfer from Marrakech. For the hammam, it varies package by package, and the prices shown in our guide include the hotel transfer only where stated.

Without a transfer, the bill changes fast. A grand taxi to Agafay costs 200 to 300 dirhams one way, and double if the driver waits or comes back for you. A 30 € package with transfer therefore often works out cheaper than an activity listed for less that you then have to reach on your own.

Getting back from Agafay on your own around 10 p.m. is complicated, and the time to worry about it is on the way out, not at dinner.

That leaves the exact pickup point. In our Agafay guide, two neighboring offers do not say the same thing: one picks you up “at your hotel,” the other “in the city center.” For anyone staying in the medina, the difference is concrete, because the medina is closed to cars. The driver will wait for you at a gate or on a square. Have them tell you which one, and have someone from the riad walk you there if you leave before daybreak. A transfer “from Marrakech” raises the same question: it leaves from a point in the city, not necessarily from your door.

For day trips, where the road matters as much as the destination, the travel times to the Atlas, Ouzoud or Essaouira are set out in our page on day trips from Marrakech.

Can you pay on the spot?

Not everywhere. At the Jardin Majorelle, tickets can be bought only online, on the garden’s sole official website, which declines all responsibility for tickets sold elsewhere; the garden opens every day at 8 a.m. On a very hot morning, it is the visit to do first. The Bahia Palace also sells its tickets online, on the Ministry of Culture ticket office. Neighborhood hammams, at 20 to 80 MAD, are paid at the counter, but they suit independent travelers: no English, no explanations.

Paying on the spot means paying in dirhams, and dirhams are obtained in Morocco. The Office des Changes, Morocco’s foreign exchange office, in principle prohibits importing and exporting dirhams, and tolerates at most 2,000 dirhams in banknotes per traveler. Change money on arrival, at an official bureau that displays its rates; street exchange offers are scams, without exception. Cards work without much risk in hotels and established restaurants, a little less so in small shops with old terminals. When in doubt, our safety guide recommends cash.

When an activity includes a pickup, settle everything beforehand: payment made, or at least the amount confirmed. Paying the driver on the day is no problem if the confirmation already states the sum and what it covers; discovering the price on arrival is. The rule we give for riads applies here too: never wire money directly to a bank account. A seller who demands cash when a traceable payment exists deserves the same suspicion as a riad that does the same.

Book before you leave, or once you’re there

Anything you can reach on foot can wait until you are there: a hammam that same afternoon, a visit to the medina, a cooking class booked the day before. Anything that needs a vehicle or has limited places gets booked ahead.

The hot air balloon is booked a week ahead in high season, because baskets are limited. Pool days in Agafay go fast on weekends: at least three days before. At the hammam, Friday and Saturday evenings are taken three to four days ahead. From October to April, slots go 24 to 48 hours in advance.

Once there, be wary above all of the first person who offers. Excursions sold in the street add extras you don’t see coming. If you book a guided tour once you arrive, know that a guide must hold accreditation from the Ministry of Tourism, which issues a professional card. Asking to see it is normal, and a licensed guide takes no offense.

Booking in French

It is often possible, provided you ask. Several of the Agafay packages in our guide list a French-speaking guide among what is included. When the language is not specified, assume nothing.

Write your request in French, with the date, the number of people and the children’s ages, the exact name of your accommodation, the activity you want and the guide’s language, to be confirmed in the reply. That reply already tells you something: a provider who writes quickly, clearly and in French before the booking has a good chance of staying just as clear once you are there.

Free cancellation: a promise, not a right

Under French consumer law, an online purchase in principle gives 14 days to withdraw. For a leisure activity provided on a set date, that period does not apply, as Service-Public.fr, the French government’s official information site, points out. Free cancellation is therefore a condition set by the seller, and it is worth what the seller has written.

Before paying, find the cancellation deadline and save it with the confirmation. Platforms often offer better cancellation guarantees than booking direct, which sometimes gives access to negotiated rates in low season, as our Agafay guide notes. Flexibility or price, your call, as long as the choice is made before paying.

The hot-air balloon flight follows its own rules when the wind cancels it, and we cover them separately.

Checking that a provider is reliable

Several clues, taken together, say a lot. The first is written in black and white: the total price, what is included, the pickup place and time, the language, the cancellation terms. An offer that is vague on one of these points will stay vague on the day.

Next come the reviews from the last three months, rather than the average rating. A well-run camp at 120 € often beats a 350 € camp that grew too fast. Same logic for a quad or a hammam: it is the team currently in place that will receive you.

For a guided tour, the guide’s professional card. Behind a quad or a balloon, know which company actually operates, especially when a reseller sits in between. And a traceable payment, always.

By season

City activities run all year, but not at the same hours.

In July, average highs reach 37 to 38 °C, with peaks above 40 °C during heat waves. Walking visits between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. then become punishing. When it is very hot, put the outdoors at both ends of the day: gardens at opening time, Agafay at sunset. In the middle, keep what happens indoors: hammam, museum or a long lunch in the shade of a riad.

It rains little: Marrakech gets about 250 mm a year, mostly between November and April, in short and sometimes stormy showers. So what is there to do in Marrakech when it rains? The hammam first: our guide to hammams and spas in Marrakech details the packages. Then the covered palaces and museums, or a cooking class. That day, only mountain outings are to be avoided. We explain separately how to fill a rainy day in Marrakech, district by district.

Ramadan does not shut activities down, but some restaurants close during the day and the dates change every year with the lunar calendar. Check them when you book.

With family, transfer included

Where can you find family activities with a transfer? Among the options that pick you up at the door, a line that matters more with children than elsewhere. The medina is hard going with a stroller, between uneven paving and motorbikes, and an option that picks you up saves crossing the city on foot before you have even started. Outing by outing, family activities that include the transfer have their own page.

Check the age before the price. On the quad offer featured in our Agafay guide, the quad is for adults only and the buggy is open to all. At the hammam, some establishments accept children aged 8 to 10 with a parent.

In what order to go about it

Before you leave, book whatever has limited places or a fixed date: the hot air balloon, a pool day on a weekend, tickets sold only online. On the first evening, choose the outing beyond the city that matters most to you, and book it with transfer. The rest, hammam, classes, visits on foot, is decided day by day, according to the weather and everyone’s energy.

Finally, keep every confirmation offline, with the provider’s number. That is what will help you the morning the driver is waiting at a different gate from yours.
