In a riad, the spa is often a basement hammam room, two or three treatment rooms in a row, black soap placed on a folded towel, and staff who have been doing this for a long time in a two-hundred-year-old building. The scale is different, the intimacy too. It's not better or worse than a hotel spa; it's structurally something else.
We have been living in Marrakech for a long time and we’ve had the chance to understand that travelers’ expectations on this subject are often misaligned. Those who arrive wanting a Mandarin Oriental with four pools, a fitness room, and a 40-item spa menu will be disappointed. Those who arrive looking for a traditional hammam, hand-applied argan oil, and a quiet inner courtyard to decompress after treatments: they will find exactly that, and often better than they hoped.
We reviewed our database of over 80 riads with verified spas in Marrakech. The seven addresses below are the ones we would recommend to someone we know. To choose where to stay in Marrakech in general, our guide compares all the neighborhoods and types of accommodation.
Who is this for?
It suits me very well For couples who want to integrate wellness into their stay, not just practice it once as an option. For travelers on short wellness retreats (two to four nights) who want a relaxation-focused break. For those who are already familiar with the spa-hotel concept and are curious to experience it in a radically different setting. For lovers of traditional hammams who want a private or semi-private hammam experience without going to a public establishment.
It's less suitable to travelers looking for a spa in the athletic sense (fitness room, Olympic pool, wellness circuit with alternating hot and cold baths). This type of accommodation exists in Marrakech, but not in the riads, rather in palaces and large hotels. For very short stays (one night) where the booking time for the hammam and the logistics of the treatments don't justify the extra cost of this type of address.

Our favorite addresses
Out of the 87 riads with a spa verified in our database, we have selected seven. All have a rating higher than 9.1/10 and at least 587 verified reviews. All have the confirmed spa flag in our enrichment data.

Riad Dar Hamid Hotel & Spa
Riad Dar Hamid Hotel & Spa it is our first choice, both because the quality score is the highest in our riad-spa corpus and because the 1,173 verified reviews guarantee consistency you can rely on. The riad also has a swimming pool, an on-site hammam, and a full spa. Rated 9.3/10. This is the most complete version of the package: you can spend a whole day between the pool, the treatments, and the terrace without leaving the property.

Riad Dar Elma And Spa
Same setup (pool, hammam, spa) but in a slightly more intimate setting. Riad Dar Elma And Spa totalize 809 reviews for a score of 9.3/10, placing the establishment in the same high range. It is particularly recommended for couples seeking the intimacy of a riad with wellness treatments without the «big structure» feel. The spa offers a hammam and argan oil-based treatments. The value for money in the luxury range remains within the limits of what we would recommend without hesitation.

Riad Dar Saad – Hammam & Rooftop Café
This riad has the honesty to put "hammam" in its name, and that deserves to be noted. Riad Dar Saad – Hammam & Rooftop Café Combine a pool, a hammam, and a rooftop café with 946 reviews averaging 9.2/10. This is the most «everyday riad life» oriented address in our selection: you come for the treatments and stay for breakfast on the rooftop. A good option for those who don't just want a room with a hammam in the basement, but an establishment that has made these two elements its identity.

Riad Esmeralda
Note 9.6/10 out of 726 reviews: Riad Esmeralda it is the highest-rated property in our selection. The riad has a pool and a spa, without an on-site hammam (spa only). For travelers who want the spa without necessarily the traditional hammam, or who plan to visit a neighborhood hammam outside, this is the most cohesive combination. The intimacy of the place is a real added value: the reviews emphasize the quality of the welcome and the tranquility of the inner courtyard.

Riad Dar Beldia and Spa
Also rated 9.6/10 from 676 reviews, Riad Dar Beldia and Spa is our other top pick for this range of customer satisfaction. Pool and spa, no hammam on-site. This riad stands out for its interior architecture, with very detailed zellij tilework and carved wood. It's suited for travelers who want immersion in traditional medina aesthetics as much as in a wellness program. Riad Villa Wengé & Spa
Riad Villa Wengé & Spa It is the only hotel in our selection without a pool, and that is intentional on our part. This riad embodies the pure spa-hammam concept: 9.3/10 from 978 reviews, in-house hammam and comprehensive treatments, without a pool to «compensate.» For travelers who come specifically for the treatments and not for the pool, this is the most logical choice. Cheaper than pool-spa packages with equivalent wellness performance.

Riad Karmela
In a more accessible price range than the previous six addresses, Riad Karmela Hammam and spa with a rating of 9.1/10 from 587 reviews. No pool, but a reservable hammam and serious treatments in a well-maintained riad. This is the option we recommend for travelers who want the spa-hammam experience without the price tag of pure luxury establishments. Good value for money in its segment.
When to come
Riads with spas do well year-round, but with nuances. In summer (June-August), the 40-degree temperatures make going outside unpleasant: a riad with a spa then becomes a logical refuge. Regarding the hammam, it's paradoxically a good season because the outside heat prepares the body for the treatment. The downside: prices rise during the peak tourist season (March-May and September-November). For optimal value for money on treatments, May or September are the most interesting windows. In winter (December-February), if you want to enjoy a pool, check that it is heated. For hammam treatments, the season is perfect.
The trap
«Spa» in Booking listings can mean many things. In the best case, it's a full Moroccan hammam with exfoliation, black soap, clay, and argan oil treatments, in a dedicated room with trained staff. In the worst case, it's a Jacuzzi in a basement with a masseuse available on demand two days a week. The difference in service between these two realities is enormous, and the price difference doesn't always reflect it.
What we check before booking: Is the hammam integrated into the riad (not outsourced), is it available by reservation at fixed times, and are there photos of the treatment room in the gallery. A riad that has invested in a real hammam will showcase it visually. If there are only photos of the courtyard and rooms, it's often a bad sign. The seven addresses in our selection all passed this test.
The other pitfall: confusing a traditional Moroccan hammam with a Western spa. They are not the same treatments, not the same atmospheres, not the same expectations. Traditional hammam is physical (deep exfoliation, dry heat, or steam), not felted. If you want a Swedish massage in a candlelit room, it's better to book at a hotel with a Western-style spa. If you want the Moroccan hammam in its original format, the riads on this list are the right address.

Our verdict
If we had to keep three addresses, they would be Riad Dar Hamid for the most complete offering (pool, hammam, spa, volume of reviews), Riad Esmeralda or Riad Dar Beldia for the highest rating (9.6/10), and Riad Karmela for travelers who want the experience without the palace price tag. The spa experience in a riad is worth choosing with full awareness of what it offers: intimacy, an authentic setting, serious treatments in an old building. Not a capital-S Spa with wave pools and gourmet restaurants. For travelers who want this second type of offering, the Luxury hotels and palaces of Marrakech are better suited. For travelers who don't yet know if a riad is the right format, The choice of accommodation type in Marrakech deserves to be considered before the neighborhood..
How it works
Most of the riads with spas in our selection have their hammams available by reservation, sometimes with private access depending on the hours. Specifically: you book upon arrival, choose a time slot, go down to a room of 15 to 40 m² depending on the establishment, and you are taken care of by a male or female therapist from the house. Treatments almost always include exfoliation (kessa), application of black soap (beldi), and an option of argan oil or clay wrap. The session lasts between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on the package chosen.
What varies from one riad to another: the finish of the room (Zellij tiles or polished concrete, dim lighting or not), availability (in a very small riad, the hammam may only be available twice a day), and the quality of products used. We have indicated this in the listings below when relevant.
For pools: Five of the seven riads in our selection have one. They are generally 5 to 12 meter pools located in the inner courtyard or garden. Not resort-style pools, but sufficient for cooling off between treatments. In winter, check if the pool is heated before booking.
A practical point: riads in the medina are pedestrian-only. You can get there on foot from Jemaa el-Fna square (ten to twenty minutes depending on the address), or by taxi to the nearest parking lot. This isn't a disadvantage if you plan for it; it's simply the reality of a car-free neighborhood.
